Whether you're a new agent or a seasoned broker, staying up to date with continuing education (CE) is a crucial part of maintaining your real estate license in Indiana. Beyond keeping your license active, CE helps you stay sharp in a constantly evolving industry—ensuring you can better serve your clients and grow your career. In this guide, we'll break down Indiana's CE requirements, explain when and how to complete them, and share a special opportunity to meet your CE needs in person.

🏛️ Why Continuing Education Matters

Real estate isn’t a one-and-done profession. Market trends, laws, technologies, and best practices are always shifting. That’s why the Indiana Real Estate Commission requires all licensed agents and brokers to complete continuing education. It ensures everyone in the field operates with the most current knowledge—keeping the public protected and professionals competitive.

Whether you're working toward renewing your broker license or simply trying to stay in good standing, understanding the CE process is essential to long-term success.

📅 CE Requirements for Indiana Brokers

If you’re a licensed real estate broker in Indiana (which includes the majority of practicing real estate professionals), here’s what you need to know:

  • Required Hours: 12 hours of approved continuing education per year.

  • Cycle: The CE year runs from July 1 to June 30 the following year.

  • Renewal Period: Brokers renew their licenses every three years, but must complete CE requirements every year.

  • Format: CE can be completed online or in person, as long as the provider is approved by the Indiana Real Estate Commission.

It’s important not to procrastinate! Completing all 12 hours in a rush at the end of June isn’t ideal—and you risk noncompliance.

🎯 CE Requirements for Managing Brokers

Managing brokers have additional responsibilities and a slightly more involved CE requirement:

  • Same CE Baseline: 12 hours of continuing education per year.

  • 4 Hours Must Be: Focused on Managing Broker-specific topics (supervision, risk management, operations, etc.).

  • These hours must be from a course designated as fulfilling the managing broker requirement.

📈 When Do CE Requirements Begin?

Your CE requirement starts the July after you receive your broker license. That means if you got your license in March 2025, you’re not responsible for completing CE until July 1, 2025.

💡 What Counts as Continuing Education?

To meet CE requirements in Indiana, your coursework must be approved by the Indiana Real Estate Commission. Approved topics include:

  • Indiana real estate law and legal updates

  • Fair housing regulations

  • Ethics and professional standards

  • Property management practices

  • Contracts and disclosures

  • Agency relationships

  • Marketing, advertising, and technology tools
